Aesthetic Gynaecology

Aesthetic Gynaecology

Female genital health no longer means just the absence of disease. More importance is given to the quality of life, how content a woman is with her private parts and how she feels about herself. Major life situations such as childbirth and menopause can alter the genitals. Some women may be dissatisfied with the appearance. Occasionally women may experience chaffing and pain with activities such as cycling or running due to the hypertrophied labia.

These conditions which affect the women’s psychosocial and cultural well being can lead to hypoactive or decreased sexual desire. They are addressed by the reassuring, educating the women regarding the normal body parts and its functioning. If this fails, aesthetic gynaecology procedures are indicated.

The most performed Aesthetic Gynaecology procedures include:

  • Labiaplasty – The 2 pairs of lips in the genital regions include labia majora and labia minora. Women may want the outer lips to appear larger and the inner lips to appear symmetric or smaller. The procedures done to attain these results are called Labiaplasty. Procedures done on the labia majora mainly include injections known as fillers for plumping of labia majora.

Some women may be unhappy with the labia minora- either too large or bothered due the asymmetry between the two sides. Procedure of the labia minora is indiacted in such cases.
  • Vaginoplasty – The muscles around the vagina get lax after childbirth or with aging. This leads to sexual dissatisfaction and a feeling of insecurity. Vaginoplasty is a procedure to create a neovagina or tighten the vagina.
  • Clitoral hood reduction- The clitoris is a highly sensitive organ, the primary function of which is pleasure. The part which is seen on the outside is only a part of it. Most of it is obscured beneath the skin and pubic bone. Some women may feel that the layer of skin covering the exposed part of clitoris hinders pleasure and ask for reduction of the covering skin.
  • Colpoperrineorhhaphy – the tightening of the pelvic floor muscles to correct the difficulties in passing urine, stools and improve sexual functioning.

Most of the procedures are day care procedures which do not require overnight admission.

Complications are minimal (<1-2%) when done taking all the necessary precautions.
